What Is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) & Why Do NZ Businesses Need It?
We'll be upfront about something: we asked ChatGPT about our own agency recently. It thought we might be a nonprofit in San Francisco.
That's not a typo. We're BLOOM Transitions - a New Zealand HubSpot Gold Partner agency that helps businesses with AEO, SEO, HubSpot implementation, and Shopify. And the AI had us confused with a youth charity on the other side of the world.
It was embarrassing. It was also the push we needed.
We're now running a live 90-day experiment to grow our own AI visibility from scratch - and documenting every step publicly on LinkedIn. This blog post is where we explain the "what" and "why" behind the work. The data and results are coming in the posts that follow.
So, what exactly is Answer Engine Optimisation?
Answer Engine Optimisation - AEO for short - is the process of structuring your website and digital presence so AI platforms can find, understand, trust, and cite your business as a direct answer to the questions your customers are asking.
If you haven't noticed by now that Google searches mostly show AI-generated answers before traditional search results - you must be living under a rock. And when you use tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, or Perplexity to research a supplier, a service, or a solution - you get a recommendation, not a list of ten blue links.
How is AEO different from SEO?
Think of it this way: SEO gets you found on Google. AEO gets you recommended by AI.
SEO focuses on technical factors, backlinks, and keyword rankings in traditional search results. AEO focuses on whether AI engines can understand who you are, what you do, and why you're trustworthy enough to recommend.
The good news is they're complementary. Strong SEO makes AEO more effective, because AI engines heavily weight content that already ranks well in traditional search. And AEO content - which is structured, direct, and question-answering by design - tends to improve your traditional search rankings too.
You don't have to choose. But if you're only doing one, you're leaving the other half of the search landscape to your competitors.
What does AEO actually involve?
Based on what we've implemented for our own brand - and what we do for clients - here are the practical foundations:
1. Entity clarity AI engines need to know who you are - without any ambiguity. That means clear, factual copy on your homepage and About page that directly answers "what is [your business] and what do they do?" For us, that means fixing the San Francisco nonprofit confusion by rewriting our entity copy and adding Organisation schema to our homepage.
2. Structured content AI engines cite content that directly answers the questions buyers are asking. That means FAQ sections on your service pages, blog posts that answer specific questions in plain language, and service page copy that leads with the answer rather than burying it in marketing language.
3. Schema markup Schema markup is structured data code that sits invisibly in your page's code and tells AI engines exactly who you are, what you do, and where you operate - in unambiguous, machine-readable terms. For most businesses, Organisation schema on the homepage and FAQPage schema on service pages are the right starting points.
4. Citation building AI engines don't just look at your website. They look at what other authoritative sources say about you - directories, review platforms, industry listings, and peer mentions. Getting your business mentioned consistently across the right external sources is one of the most powerful things you can do for AI visibility.
5. Tracking and measurement You can't improve what you can't measure. We track our AI visibility using HubSpot's AI search grader and SEMrush's AI visibility toolkit - monitoring citation rates, prompt visibility, sentiment scores, and competitor benchmarks. We pull the data monthly and share it honestly, good and bad.
It's important to be aware that none of this happens overnight. You won't see your AI citations change the day after you add schema markup or rewrite your service pages. But if the foundations are right, it will happen.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Realistically, 8-12 weeks before you see measurable movement in AI visibility metrics. Some wins - like fixing brand disambiguation or adding schema markup - can show results faster. Others, like citation building and content authority, compound over time.
We started our own experiment in May 2026. Follow our LinkedIn series to see how it's going - we're publishing everything and will be sharing more detailed insight on our journey here.
Frequently asked questions about AEO
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimisation. It is also known as Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), AI Search Optimisation, or Large Language Model (LLM) Optimisation. All refer to the same goal: making your brand visible and citable in AI-generated answers.
Which AI platforms does AEO target?
AEO targets the major AI answer platforms including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity. These are the tools your customers are increasingly using to research suppliers, services, and solutions before making contact.
Do I need to choose between SEO and AEO?
No. SEO and AEO work best together. Strong SEO makes AEO more effective, and well-structured AEO content tends to improve traditional search rankings. The businesses seeing the best results are investing in both.
How do I know if my business has an AEO problem?
Ask ChatGPT or Gemini about your business or your category. If you don't appear in the answer, or if the AI describes you inaccurately, you have an AEO gap. That's exactly the situation we found ourselves in - and it's fixable.
Does BLOOM Transitions offer AEO services for NZ businesses?
Yes. BLOOM Transitions is a New Zealand HubSpot Gold Partner agency offering AEO strategy, schema markup implementation, structured content, and AI visibility tracking for small and mid-sized businesses across New Zealand and Australia. We're one of the only NZ agencies combining AEO expertise with deep HubSpot implementation experience. Contact us to get started.
Ready to find out where you stand?
Start by asking ChatGPT or Gemini: "What is [your business name] and what do they do?" Then ask: "Who are the best [your service] providers in [your city or region]?"
If you don't like what comes back - or if you don't appear at all - we can help.
